Wow what a success the TMR annual awards banquet...perhaps one of the best ever with everything from the tunes taken care of and spun by Dan Pieters from Penticton to the fine meal put on by Good Stuff Catering of Kelowna, where would one start? For starters I want to say thanks to everyone involved in setting up this years party, every year it runs smoother and smoother. The first of what we hope will be a long line of auctions was a HUGE success and we at TMR want to thank all the businesses and members that contributed to the list of 51 items for auction also to those who bid on and won the items also. A major thanks to Pete Shaw and Gerry Pieter's for their tireless effort in securing most of the items. Gerry just contacted me with the total and it stands 3400.00 and change. I have already heard rumor that items will start being collected as soon as the new year begins for next years auction.
The winners for this years club trophies  were well chosen and might I say well deserved by all winners,

MEMBER OF THE YEAR
has to be shared by two individuals, and the winners are Doug and Jacquie Dipple for their tireless hours devoted to the betterment and upkeep of our facility.
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
award goes to relatively new volunteer but a long time member on the mountain and the winner is Rob Pollman.
DENNIS CARTER MEMORIAL AWARD
Awarded for the first time this year to the Most Sportsmanlike Racer as decided upon by fellow racers. This first time award goes to a new racer on TMR and the winner is Barton Mason.

The numbers are in and the votes counted...Votes? what votes?.. After TMR's general elections held last night the TMR governing body remains the same as last year. No new persons were nominated for any of the TMR positions and all persons let their names stand and win by acclamation. We would like to thank the following for their support in carrying us into a new season of Racing at Thunder Mountain.

 Feel free to contact any of our personnel listed below and thank them for their personal support. Also listed below you will find the new list of class stewards that offered to head up the individual class. This will take a lot work off the shoulders of Mark and Charles in the 07 season. The class stewards will be responsible for the handling of all class structuring, meetings, ladders on race day etc;

Last night Kerry Beebe chaired the first meeting in the Top Comp Class it was voted on the change the tree in that class to a 5 10ths sportsman tree rather than the 4 tenths pro tree they have been running, it was also voted on to leave the time break at 6:49 rather than raise the level to 5:49

This mornings additions to the TMR Auction have slowed but we still anticipate many more high dollar items to come in as we draw closer the draw date. Have you checked out your copy of  Canadian Classics Magazine yet this month? They have a small article on Kerry Beebe's Model A and...and.. some very kind words on Thunder Mountain Raceway from author Moe Putney. Moe also states that they plan extensive article in the near future on our little track.
The 07 season should be the year for TMR to shine with all the new improvements and timing system installed not to mention the dozen new cars in different stages of readiness, yes TMR is going to rock in 07
What's with this Gerry Pieter's guy???? wow more donations coming in steady for the TMR auction. Talking to him yesterday he tells me that Ryan at RH Racecars. Just donated an awesome item!! Hint close to a $1,000.00 item. Bring your wallets people. Also T.C.S has confirmed that they will be on board as well as King-O-Matic Industries and Auto Trim in Penticton.
Wow Gerry Keep up the hunt and I hope this is a nudge on the shoulder to get all members out there drumming up some items.
Steve Kendal and Bill Boult were at the track on Wednesday doing some final measuring for the timing system and say the new surfacing in the pits looks good, as a matter of fact they say it looks very good, a little wet and perhaps slightly soft on the surface due to the recent rain and snow but should and will be hard as rock by racing season.
Remember this is your site to so keep the updates coming in no matter how big or small its all news.

Gerry Pieters has been on the scrounge in Penticton for auction items and wants to send out a challenge to other members to get on the ball with this silent auction. Gerry has convinced several local businesses to come on board with donations Muntz Stereo from Penticton will donate, as will Tim Hortons, Island Convertors, and Lordco in Penticton have all indicated they will donate something. Castrol And Snap-on Tools will also donate for the auction. Gerry says I still have some more business's I am working on. Gerry was telling me today that Ashcroft raises several thousand dollars for their club every year by this type of auction so lets get behind this and drum up as much booty as we can. Any readers wishing to donate can get hold of Gerry at  Thunder-Alley Transmissions 493-6269 or Pete Shaw at psshaw@shaw.ca

The recent post on the new winter off season series is already showing interest with a note just in from Greg Kilmartin telling me  his daughter Danielle has sold her junior dragster and has purchased the  Winn's Automotive Pontiac Astre' and will be racing in Super Pro next season. Greg also tells me that alterations and improvements are already well under way and the Super Shuttle still yet renamed will be running faster than last years postings in the 7:40's

Oct 20 06
I am trying to start a new series for the off season which would profile TMR racers winter projects. I will put together a page of pics of your car in progress at various stages of finish as sent in by you along with a short story on what you are doing also to be provided by you. I just put together the first in the series on Gerry Pieter's new 67 Falcon Pro-mod. The photo spread can be found at this LINK. If anyone is interested please let me know via the site @ mrjym This could hopefully turn into  a small winter racing blues cure. I am currently working on Steve Kendal's 70 Nova work in progress to be run in TMR's highly contested Super Pro class in the 07 season by as of yet unnamed diver or driverette. Rumors are abundant that Ken Rosenke is getting the Bobcat close, I also heard recently that Greg Kilmartins new ride is also ready to rumble. The clan at The Tool Place is suppose to be putting a new tube chassis ride together for the new season, I myself am getting the Veganator close with the fiberglass almost complete and the last of the safety equipment ordered, the shuppener camp was working on a new camaro I heard about, last Sunday I was visiting with the Ogre and his S-10 is looking good with the new body work tonneu cover and pro mod wing, I also seen the workings of a new Alky motor for the Lemky pit. I haven't been over to see it yet but have been invited over to view Pete and Kayle Shaw's new Super Pro Vette they just picked up turn key! Rumors from down south puts a new blower setup on Don Thompson's altered for 07. On a recent visit to Guy Keats shop I see he is building a 67 Canso Pro Mod. The last visit I had with Gary Sylvester has his big block blown mopar altered ready for 07. I haven't seen any pics yet but I hear there is an English ford Capri being built in the Vernon area, so see there is a ton of stuff going on out there. Lets have some input. Thunder Mountain is definitely going to ROCK in the 07 season

Eighth mile racing for EVERYONE
By David Anderson Drag Racing Online
10/9/06

s I sit here reflecting back on the awesome experience of Dragstock III in Rockingham, NC, I can’t help but wonder if this whole eighth-mile racing scene would be good for DRAG RACING overall.

I was frequenting some of my favorite websites as I ran across a post on a message board that reads like this: “That’s one of the FEW downsides of the ADRL, to me at least. I’m a quarter mile fan, but who knows, I’ve never seen a live 1/8 mile race in person so maybe I don’t know what I’m missing out on. To me, a LEGAL 5-second pass in the quarter would be more impressive than a 3.70 OR 200 mph in the 1/8th.”

Resurfacing highlights from the Mountain you wanted pics well here you go click here Terry McHardy and myself took a quick trip to the Mountain today to check-up on the resurfacing project and grabbed a few pics of the finished product in some areas and some soon to be finished areas. The photos of the surface preparation were shot by Laura Millsip on the 28th. I was a little surprised when I seen the "ec1" material I was expecting road grindings so to speak but the material takes the appearance of fine sand mixed with road grindings and perhaps 5/8ths crush, I talked the foreman on site and he explained when the material is wet with the water and packed with the multi ton roller compactor the surface was in deed very very hard. It will never take on the appearance or be like paving in anyway, just really compacted road aggregate. I asked about the ease of surface damage and was told you just shovel the hole or the damage full of the same material soak it and tamp it down. Its by no means paving or any form of it but he said if the day arrives when paving would be purchased no further base work would be needed. The foreman stated 102 full loads with pup trailers will be needed to complete the job all traveling to TMR via the logging road up Carmi from Cantex from Penticton mileage being 66 kilometers one way. I forgot to ask just how many trucks were involved but will say Terry and I passed a steady stream of them both going to and returning from the track. I will post more photos as soon as they arrive. I must add the new return road and turn out is going to be a major improvement for next seasons races. Oh and I might add the new Handicapped spot looks skookum, I am wondering about the availability of a grant for that spot?

OCTOBER 2006
It is hard to believe but another season of drag racing at Thunder Mountain is in the books.  With Mother Natures cooperation all six events and two Friday nights are in the books and completed.  Even with the help of Mother Nature the races could not have been run without all of the dedicated volunteers that make Thunder Mountain what it is.  If you should happen to see any of these volunteers around town in the off-season be sure to thank them again for their unwavering dedication to the facility and the events that they make happen.  On the same note, just because the season is over don’t forget about all of those businesses and individuals that sponsor Thunder Mountain Raceway.  They appreciate your business at any time of year and again, be sure to thank them for helping to make the season a successful one.

Congratulations to all of our winners!!

On another note, the season may be over but the banquet is still to come on Nov. 18.  Tickets are $25 each and are available from Mark Schuppener at Pendozi Machine Shop and Laura Millsip at the Capital News.  Please feel free to contact any member of the executive if you require further info on tickets.  The approach of the banquet also means that all of the awards for the year must be decided upon.  Who receives these awards is up to the members and racers of this organization so please, SPEAK UP NOW!!  Any input on possible recipients should be emailed to Mark or Charles as soon as possible If you are unfamiliar with the list of awards here they are:

·        VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

·        MEMBER OF THE YEAR

·        AARON KUNSTAR AWARD|
Awarded to an individual who exhibits a dedication to the improvement of our facility

·        RUDY WEBER MEMORIAL AWARD
Awarded to an individual who exhibits a dedication to public service

·        DENNIS CARTER MEMORIAL AWARD
Awarded for the first time this year to the Most Sportsmanlike Racer as decided upon by fellow racers

If you are the proud recipient of one of these awards (or one of the High Points Champions) from the 2005 season and you have not returned your trophy yet then please contact Charles in order to arrange handing the trophy back in.  We need these trophies back so that they can be cleaned up and engraved with the 2006 recipient’s name before the banquet.

Even before the banquet arrives this year the executive members for the O.A.S.C. and the Drag Race Division of the O.A.S.C. must be chosen.  These are not decisions to be taken lightly.  The people who are chosen at the A.G.M. meeting in November (November 14 at the Best Western in Kelowna) are the people who will carry our organization and Thunder Mountain Raceway through the next season of racing.  In fairness to people that you might think would be deserving of these positions, and that you the members are willing to entrust with your racing facility, please talk to these people BEFORE (long before) Novembers meeting.  Speaking from experience it is an uncomfortable position to be put on the spot in front of the membership at the A.G.M. and one that personally Mark and I do not want to be put in again.  Start talking to people NOW!!  If you think you might be interested and want more information on what the jobs involve then talk to somebody that has done it in the past so that you know what you are getting into.  If there are people interested in sharing positions then get this organized well ahead of time so that you can go into the A.G.M. with a plan in mind.  As for Mark and I repeating as co-directors for 2007 we have stated to many people that we want to race next year.  This does not mean that we are going to turn our backs on things completely but it does mean that the workload must be shared amongst more people.  So, start thinking about whom you want for your executive next year and more importantly start acting on these thoughts now.  November will be here and gone before we know it.

In closing, thanks again to all of our sponsors and volunteers for a great 2006 season and we are looking forward to a good turnout of members at our October meeting (Tuesday Oct. 10).

Your 2006 co-directors
Mark Schuppener and Charles Siddon

Another News Flash for our last points race
Okay you animals oh and animalettes!! no paving for our last race, no! and I don't wanna hear about it. Sorry is the word from the up and ups from Westlake many apologies but they cant get the equipment to the hill for another week.

We will be still having a blast and what a better way to end the season, A full day of points racing Saturday A special Sunday Gamblers race with or without electronics, we still haven't figured that out yet. Due to contractual restrictions Montgomery Gentry cant make it to our gig so our BBQ and dance under the stars on Saturday will have tunes to rock the night away  supplied by Dan the Man Pieter's, bring year stompin boots, BBQ supplied by Good Stuff catering with Steak and all the trimmings for 6 bucks

Aug 31 2006

News Flash for our last points race of the season
For our last race of the season we moved the actual points race to the Saturday for a few of reasons:

         1. The "Field of Dreams" as it used to be called car show is on Sunday the 10'th and we did not want to conflict
         2. If it did happen to rain (bad word) on Saturday we could still use Sunday to run the final points race
         3. It gives us the Sunday to do much of the work that is needed to ready the track for the winter
         4. Anybody in the points can beat up on their car on Sunday knowing that they have all winter to fix it

As far as Sunday goes the plan is to use some of the manpower that is hopefully at the track to complete a few projects that are not crucial to racing (ie. take down all of the signage) on Sunday morning.  The intent is to leave the track electronics and Tech shack set up so that after some work is done we can run T/O's and even a gamblers race if the interest is there.  The cost for Sunday only would be $20.00 as it would be to run T/O's on any other day.  Anybody who has a seasons pass or paid for the whole weekend on Saturday will also be eligible to run on Sunday.

Thanks  Charles

The Saturday night BBQ after points race #6 will be put on by Good Stuff catering.  We have been informed by Good Stuff that the meal will be steak and that the cost will be $6.00 each.

While on the topic of food, the banquet is scheduled for November 18 and we hope to have tickets available at the final race.  Further details to follow.

Aug 29 06
The race results for Aug 25/26/27 just arrived and are as follows

Friday Night Instant Green Street Race

TMR's  Second Friday Night Street Race of the season was a total success with over 64 cars showing up for the event. The new scheduling and format for the Fri night program seems to be the way to go with both races this year a major  success. Hopefully this same criteria can be the norm for the 2007 season with maybe even a third race added

Somewhat like the Stevie Ray Vaughan Tune "if the place is a rockin' then don't come a knockin"
That pretty well sums up the action on the Mountain this past weekend with  The Cory Kincaid Nostalgia IBBA Bubble Up Funny car making many passes on both Saturday and Sunday. Not to out do TMR's own Silver er I mean Purple/Blue Bullet of Gord Smith in attendance laying 5:20  passes with tire shake and smoke the whole 1/8 mile. Oh and did I mention the one and only 240 Gordie Bonin driver of the original Bubble Up funny car himself shows up on Sunday for a super surprise visit,

For those out of the know Gordie Bonin was runner-up at the 1972 Nationals until his last national event victory in 1994 in Columbus, Gordie Bonin was one of drag racing's more successful Funny Car drivers, compiling a 9-3 record in final-round appearances at major races. For a spell in the 1970s, Bonin won his first national event title at the 1977 Gatornationals, running low e.t. (6.19) and top speed (238.72) of the meet in the process. He later began to record 240-mph runs on a regular basis to inspire the "240 Gordie" nickname. I think it was 1969, Gordie was racing a  Hurst Scrambler out of a dealership in the prairies and then jumped into junior fuel running in the 190's, and then in 72 he piloted the pacemaker Vega funny, in 1973 he drove the Roland Leong's Hawaiian, then teamed up with Jerry Verheal in 75 got the Bubble up sponsorship and won the Gatornationals in 77 with a 6.20 and a 240. in 1979, he won the Gatornationals, U.S. Nationals, and World Finals. in 1981 he won the Gatornationals again. 1993, he drove Leong's Hawaiian  Funny Car to a win in the Spring Nationals. in 1994 he was hired by Candies & Hughes to run the Smokin' Joe's Funny Car, and won 2  victories that year one at the Mid-South Nationals and the other the Springnationals. Gordie also won at least major events in the European drag racing top fuel categories. What a career, I am glad I had a chance to meet the man and shake his hand on Sunday

what a weekend! Neil Lachelt was not to be shaken with a blown motor in the motor home at the bottom of black mountain, Gets the TMR record setting dragster to the hill via pickup and out of the box lays down a 4:58 with a 165 mph, side by side run with Cory Kincaid that blew the hat off and the wax out of the track photographers ears, ear plugs and all, yes what a weekend! We haven't seen the Wagner boys on the hill in ages and both show up for the show, Dallas with his new 2002 pro mod Dodge bodied pickup and dad with ever popular dodge charger, Also on the hill for the first race of his season was Randy Smith with the Haywire Express. Gene Beauregard replaced the blown tranny from last race and layed down a wild lane sliding pass well into the 4ers, I forget the speed but sure had the crowds on their feet. Steven Kendall left early in Saturdays qualifying with yet more engine trouble, the streak of bad luck in the Summit Customs Brokers Dragster this year are running 5 for 5 with engines and trannys going away. A leak down test showed a cracked block or head on the summit dragster. We hope Steve will make it back for next race but he is hinting about bringing up his new alcohol door car for the last few races of the season. Good luck Steve and we hope you get that &@#(&$#& what ever it is off your back soon. I will get the winners listed and the points up asap and of course there will be more posted as soon as it comes in

NEWS FLASH:
I just received word via the grapevine that TMR will have a special guest /car.... nostalgia funny car at that, at our next race on July 29/30.Cory Kincaid formerly of Penticton now located in Red Deer Alta will be bringing his IBBA Nostalgia Funny Car which is a near perfect replica of the Gordy Bonin Bubble up Funny Car to TMR looking for some match races. Cory's recent IHRA outing in Edmonton showed the crowd a steady stream of 7.50 quarter mile runs. After hearing from TMR's only  Funny car crew it looks as though the  Hane Camp have other commitments for that weekend. Check back later in the week for more updates

Some Rule Fluff from the NHRA Gawds concerning the "box" crowd

"
NHRA issues reminder on wiring for vehicles with delay boxes"
6/29/2006

The NHRA Technical department has released the following reminder regarding proper wiring of the delay box and throttle stops in all categories (Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Super Eliminator, Top Comp, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, and Super Pro E.T.) that permit a delay device.

The 2006 NHRA Rulebook outlines that only one delay device is permitted and may be attached to the transbrake, shift timer, and/or the throttle timer only. This does not allow the delay device to be connected to the ignition system, the tachometer, the data recorder, or rpm-activated automatic shifters.

The Rulebook further states that no wiring from the delay device shall be connected directly, or indirectly, between any part of the ignition system and any other device (such as data recorders, tachometers, suspension components, fuel-injection system, etc).

Also, no wiring shall be connected directly, or indirectly, between any part of the ignition system and the delay box other than the two-step/launch control wire that splices into the transbrake or line-loc control wire.

Lastly, the rpm-based automatic shifters and built-in tachometers that are incorporated into some delay boxes may not be used for any purpose.

Any driver caught in violation of any of these rules will be subject to punishment, which may include indefinite suspension and monetary fines, in the sole and absolute discretion of NHRA. The NHRA Technical staff will check that vehicles in competition are in compliance with these rules throughout the season.

Thanks to Laura we have some pics  of the final stage of TMR's Guard Rail  program, It's been a long process but we are finally complete with the guard rails stretching from one end to the other. Many people need congratulating on the years of fund raising and many businesses for their large donations toward the project. " You know who you are"  and thanx from all the racers on the mountain. Much thanks to Ron, Kevin and Fraser from Kon Kast who got the job done in record time, and to Tony and Ian for all their assistance and generosity.

News on the Test N Tune weekend will come soon but until then you can view a few pics at the following link. I only managed to get up to the track on Sunday and for just a couple of hours but while I was there the weather was great with a good turn out of cars and sleds covering all the classes. The track was well prepped and looked in as good condition as I have seen for a test n tune. The whole facility is in tip top shape and ready for race one on the 17/18 June. Lets see all you racers in two weeks tuned and ready for  action!!
