New Years Agenda

There are several areas of how we conduct the day to day goings on of our division that need some upgrading and streamlining. I would like everyone to give these areas some thought and  come to the January meeting prepared to redo, restructure, throw out or redesign anything that you feel isn't working for us as a division and give us a reason why.

Looks to me like the snow machines would have a great day of drag racing here

TMR 2004 Advertising
Remember the motto "Tough times don't last....Tough people do". That's us! The mere fact we survived last year, is testament that there are still things we need to accomplish and do not necessarily to prove to anybody but ourselves that we can do it. There are untapped resources out there that the handful of us have attempted to get a poster each year do not have access to. Again all it takes is a minute of your day to make a suggestion, drop off some literature, and see what happens, The more people doing this the better chance we have to meet or beat our goals for 2004.So please...if you need some advertising material, give me a call, together we can do this, meaning that all of you can and will make a difference.
Husky Community Rebate Program
Support the Okanagan Auto Sports Club now by renewing. This program just keeps getting better and better, our second rebate cheque has arrived, for ..well?? over $300.00. After 6 months I have come to the conclusion, that this project is going to be supported solely by the people of the Drag Race Division. Hence all rebate monies will be directed to the Drag Race Division
account, and will be use expressly For upcoming projects or much needed items. Again I am encouraging all of us to get on the Bandwagon with family and friends, you can ask for as many cards as you need!, Give me a call at 1-250-763-7358 or email me at Laura and I will get the cards to you right away.

This Link was just sent to us from C.A.R.S. Racing Engines in Prince George. Mike has been Steve Kendall's engine builder for years, on that note I have never known Steve to have an engine problem. Drop by Mikes Site then drop him a line and tell him you seen it here

Just a note that Thunder Alley Transmissions has a new website put together by Gerry's son Dan and is up and running. You can drop by via the above link. Speaking with Gerry today he tells me that the site is in its infancy stage and will progress as time permits. Drop into Gerry's site and browse the pages, drop him a line and tell him you seen it here

1892 Philion Road Carriage
(one of the oldest existing American built cars and the only one produced)

I came across this article posted on the Harrahs Antique Auto Museum Website while doing a search for one of the oldest cars in North America
Achille Philion was a showman and his travels took him as far away as Canada, France, and the West Indies. He began working on his steam carriage in 1887, but because he traveled, he would take the unfinished carriage with him wherever he went and work on it as time allowed. Several reports credit the carriage as operating in 1890. It was patented in 1892 , but was never duplicated. The Philion steam carriage is one of the oldest existing American-built "automobiles."
Thousands of visitors saw Philion's steam carriage displayed at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Steam was a common motive power then and coal was used as fuel (later changed to oil). A chauffeur sat behind the boiler and was responsible for oiling and maintaining steam. The carriage could be steered from either the front or the rear and a speed of 8 mph was possible.
Mr. Philion's steam carriage appeared in the movies "Excuse My Dust" with Red Skelton and "The Magnificent Amberson's"
with Orson Wells.
Where will we mount that "small block"

I can almost hear the sighs from here    The 03 season is officially over on the Mountain, and with many Thunder Mountain Racers taking in the last race in Ashcroft last weekend leaves just the last race in Mission this weekend. For most of us its time to tear the cars down and start getting freshened up for the 04 season. I for one hope the 04 season on the Mountain is as good as the past season. A lot of fun and good times are sure be remembered and become the base for story tellers around the evenings camp fires in the future.
Also keep checking the site as some important dates and events to be posted soon
The 03 Seasons points final have been posted to the points page Congrats to all the season points winners

As it stands right now, I am going to need at least 2 volunteers in the Tech Shack for the weekend. Unfortunately Jessey who I have been training all season, must attend to personal business and will unable to work this weekend. I have also just been informed that my gate personnel also will not be able to fulfill their commitment, so this leaves us extremely vulnerable. If anyone is available to work these positions, please contact me ASAP.

Sept 17 03
I would gather you all have heard our last race of the season will be held on the weekend of Sept 27/28 03, weather permitting. The weekend will be hectic to say the least with Todd and Tiffany trying to run the "Instant Green" street races on the Friday night, Thunder Mountains race no. 4 will be held on Sat. and Thunder Mountains Race no. 5 will be held on the Sun. along with all this action we are still trying to put on our yearly street legal big buck shoot out. More info will follow in the next few days.

t was a fabulous end to a tumultuous season (bike thinking it was a cross between a Mexican Jumping Bean and a Bucking Bronco), very unpredictable weather (monsoons in Edmonton),
and wondering at every turn whether the bike was actually going to stay together for a complete season. Both rider and bike are pretty tuckered out, but happy. Major thanks to the Silver Bullet crew for all their time, effort and never losing sight (after the disastrous year of 2002) of what was at the end of the rainbow...the knowledge that you DID IT...and of course the illustrious "gold card".

Hi Everyone, this morning I spoke with the Ministry of Forests and the Kamloops Fire District, who is in charge of the ban on travel & Crown Land. They are adamant that unless the rain starts to fall within the next couple of days, and doesn't stop for awhile, the ban will stay in place until September 14th. If no precipitation is due to fall within that date, then they will extend the ban towards the end of September. Even though we run a private facility, we still operate on Crown Land and that makes it impossible for us to continue on, until we are told otherwise. There are no ands, ifs or buts with regards to this situation. I know that we go through dry spells every year up there, but when they are recording this as the worst drought since 1899, we will heed the messages, we will support the ban & assist in anyway we can. None of us have faced a situation like this before, so it's one day at a time. I wish I had more positive news for you, but this is the bottom line. If and when we are given the OK to continue on, then I would ask that all of you, help spread the word.
Thanking you in advance, for your cooperation and understanding. The Dragg'in Lady

Race No. 3 is in the books. What a terrific weekend! Hot Hot Hot Hot, both the racing and the weather, The car count was down a bit from last race but with the Molson Indy in Vancouver and SIR's main event of the year this weekend Seattle, not to mention the heat I think we did a-ok with a count in the high 50's. I will get things updated as soon as the info gets here. I was kept way too busy this weekend in my own pits, "which was actually a good thing" but a bad thing in photo department. If you have any pic's and want me to post them, email them to me, please don't edit /crop, 640x480 jpg. works great for me, so lets get those scanners fired up and clog  my email.

I will get the site updated as soon as the info comes in, we had a great weekend though. Hats off to all volunteers who worked double hard this past weekend with the double header. Also Tiffany and Todd's Instant Green!!!! wow major success!!!! Also a major thank-you to all the Fri night Instant Green Volunteers. Over 300 spectators and 49 registered cars, those kind of numbers in the spectator end of it either ties or beats TMR regular race weekend attendance records. The 49 cars was a bigger draw than both TMR seasonal Test and Tune and Race One. I heard that a few people thought the cars we drew were not the targeted cars? I think the interest that was shown in Round one pretty well proves "if you put it together, they will come"

A note from "The Dragon Lady"
Just a reminder to ALL RACERS. As we had already completed the first rounds of eliminations in 3 of the 7 classes, this denotes that ONLY THE RACERS who were registered by 10:30 am on Sunday June 22, will be able to "actually race" on Saturday July 12. We will offer the $25.00 per day T/O's with no guarantees of how many passes you might get. Once again everything depends
on the weather.

Unless the weather is spectacular and we start at a decent time (10:00 am), there will be no King of the Hill run on Saturday July 12.

The vehicles that were entered and ready to race on the Sunday (June 22) morning WILL NOT have to be re-teched on the Saturday morning.

Sunday morning (July 13) all cars that weren't teched on Saturday, WILL HAVE to be teched for the 2nd race and resign waivers when you come to pay for race #2. This complies with our insurance.

All vehicles that were logged in with a tech warning, will be checked to make sure the offence has been corrected, and we can clear the warning in the computer.

Thanks to all in advance for your patience and understanding. This is only the 3rd time in 8 years we have had to run a double header, but it doesn't make it any easier, and I am asking for your cooperation in this matter.
This little tid-bit in from the numbers gurus at TMR, it seems our last Saturdays Top Comp time trials seen the fastest side by side pass ever on the hill with Steve Kendal in the Summit  Customs Brokers Dragster versus Kerry Beebe in his self sponsored dragster. Both turned sub 5 second passes with Kerry spinning a 4.959 at 145.448 mph and Steve turning a personal best of   4.927 at 142.316 mph. Congrats to both of these top competitors.
I know Steve went on to set better his personal best later in the day with a ? I believe  4.87,
For any of the competitors at last race and haven't heard, due to the rain out before completion of the race we will be making up the remainder on Saturday  July 12 with race number two scheduled for the following day.
I just want to add that I didn't get time to take any Pics of the last race soooooooo, if you have pic's please send em to me un cropped or edited

Just a note on the proposed drag strip in Oliver, No slicks, No vht, No open headers, No trailer cars? A huge Sub and honkin` stereo is almost a must, Last nights meeting drew a great turnout with even a few  Kelowna faces in the crowd. But! the message I was getting was "drag racers" need not apply. I wish them good luck in their endeavor. Perhaps with a street racer plan going ahead it may be "a foot in the door" for a few exhibition runs. or maybe even a full blown race day.

What wouldn't you give to see this baby run down the track? anyone with any info on this Eddy Hill classic lemme know

I am hearing info that almost every track in the country is climbing on the Friday Night Street Car Drags scenario. Lets get behind this thing and make it happen, Before someone else reaps the rewards.

Now onto the latest rumor floating around the South Okanagan! is there room for another drag strip in the Okanagan? Apparently so. A large number of people are trying to get a track set up in Oliver, utilizing the Oliver Airport as the Track. I have talked to these people and it looks like a go?????, The idea has been kicked around for years but i guess the right people are now getting involved. There is a meeting in Oliver on Wed night of which several of  us south Ok. racers will be attending
Got any newz?? lets have it, this is your website to Jim

I
t has been decided that from this upcoming race forward that OASC memberships will no longer be processed during the course of a race day at TMR. Forms can be picked up during the day and brought back in the evening so that the information can be processed in time for the points race the next day. We hope this will ease the workload on the Tech staff during the day. Thanx

Updates? Updates? Updates?
Sorry no new news, TMR Test and Tune just days away and no news. Although I heard a rumor that the "Night Of Fire" Drag s are on hold for yet another year. I will post the inside scoop as soon as it hits the desktop. I do want to remind all members and nonmembers alike that we will be at the track on Saturday for our annual Spring Clean Up, lets all turn out and pitch in a hand to get things ship shape for another fun season of drag racing. Remember single lane passes only on Sunday, I cant wait to try out the new concrete launch pads, I think it is a pretty safe assumption to state the 60 ft times will fall big time.

I came across this for "sale ad" posted on the web the other night and felt I just had to post it. I bet this will make the Mopar boys shake their heads!!

Don Hackenberg's kandy-emerald painted "TABOO Too" 1968 Hurst/Cuda loaded up on it's ramp truck some time in the early 1970's as an advertisement to sell the car in a drag newspaper (probably National Dragster, not sure).

Hey.... I heard through the grapevine that a TMR racer run a .333  in Ashcroft last weekend, I also heard the 427 was running a soft tune..... till he gets the bugs worked. Looking forward to seeing some super smokey burnouts on the Hill this season big guy.

MAY 25  03
I haven't received any updates for the website in a while so I thought I would post an article I came across while surfing the web, Perhaps this would be a good time for a few of you TMR regulars to send me your member profiles or drop me a line to bring your present profile update.

Hydraulic Roller Cams versus Solid Roller Cams

There's an old joke in the pits that goes something like "How do you know when a motor is in a bracket racer's car? If the valve cover nuts are rusted and the valve cover is dusty."

The point of the joke is that bracket racers simply don't have time to do a lot of maintenance between rounds. Cooling the engine and trans, refueling and perhaps a few adjustments to the throttle stop and delay box are about all they have time for, especially if it is a six, seven or even eight round affair. They especially don't want to be forced to take the valve covers off and adjust the valve lash or check springs or any of those things that Pro and some class racers have to do as a matter of course.

So, both weekend warriors and professional bracket racers are buying engines built to deliver the power they need without being run on the ragged edge every pass. They generally are buying 500-600 inch engines that make power at 8,000 rpm or less and require freshening once a year at most.

In order to deliver that kind of power and performance, engine builders have had to develop engines that deliver the torque and horsepower the racers want and yet are reliable.

One area in the engine that has been the subject of much R&D in an effort to deliver parts that are "bulletproof" is the valvetrain. Roller cams, lifters, rocker arms and high pressure springs have long been the choice of engine builders when it comes to building engines that are both reliable and powerful. Builders know that in order to make power at higher rpm ranges or with smaller motors, the use of mechanical "roller" camshafts, lifters and springs has been required. Those pieces, however, are expensive to buy and replace, and re quire regular maintenance by the racer.

DEFINITIONS

Just what is a "roller" camshaft and why is it a desirable item to have in a high performance engine? The term roller actually doesn't apply to the camshaft itself but rather to the lifters and the rocker arms. A "flat tappet" camshaft's lifter is a solid cylinder of metal that sits directly on the surface of the cam lobe and actuates the push rod and the rocker arm. A solid or hydraulic lifter combined with a standard no-roller rocker arm create more heat and drag in the engine because of friction.

A roller camshaft lifter and rocker arm have a roller bearing at one end of the lifter to help reduce friction, heat, wear, and drag in the engine. Those components also aid the engine to rpm quicker and higher than a solid or conventional hydraulic lifter engine.

Roller cams are usually found in engines that make power in the 8,000-11,000 rpm range. In order for the camshaft to live at that rpm range, the manufacturers had to develop valvetrain components using stronger and more expensive material. So "roller" camshafts were made from a solid piece of billet steel instead of cast material, roller bearing lifters were specially engineered for improved durability, and valve springs were made of expensive steel using expensive methods.

So, you are asking, what does all of this have to do with the subject of hydraulic roller cams and bracket or Sportsman racing. Well, fellow racers, here is the deal.

BENEFITS

  1. With some limitations, hydraulic roller camshafts offer a racer many of the benefits of a roller cam with almost none of the drawbacks. Instead of a conventional roller lifter, they use a hydraulic lifter with a roller bearing on one end. True, the hydraulic lifters are heavier than the conventional roller lifters, but, generally speaking, once they've been adjusted you can forget them.
  2. Hydraulic roller cams, because of the weight of the lifter, generally rev up past 7,000-rpm so springs, rocker arms and push rods don't take much abuse or need much maintenance.
  3. Both the roller and hydraulic lifter cams are turned from a piece of billet material hydraulic rollers so both offer durability
  4. A hydraulic roller costs a bit less than a regular roller.

So, you ask, will a hydraulic roller make the horsepower and torque I need to run between

7.50 and 10.90? The cam people I talked to gave me a qualified yes. In doing research for this article, I talked to cam designers from
Isky Racing Cams, Competition Cams, and Crane Cams, engine builder Jim Oddy, Stan Ray of Ohio Crankshaft, and Scott Walker of
ASW Race Engines.

The general opinion among all of them was that for all but the most high horsepower requirements a hydraulic roller cam was probably
the best compromise between a regular high performance flat-tappet cam and a full-boogie, roller-lifter cam. Everyone agreed that up
to about 7,000 rpm the hydraulic roller cam will make approximately the same horsepower and torque that a conventional roller cam will
in a like engine. The only apparent drawback is that if your applications require an engine that operates above 7,000 rpm you'll have
to take a pass on the hydraulic roller.

Crane Cams' camshaft R&D Director Mark Campbell said that Crane put hydraulic roller cams in all of the vehicles in Frank Hawley's
drag school. Why? The answer is simple. Low or no maintenance -- which is all important to many racers today who either don't have
the time or the inclination to adjust valve lash after each lap. A hydraulic roller cam

lifter is adjusted to zero lash. No feeler gauge is required; just tighten the adjustment up. This would be an especially important benefit
to those who have a high performance street car or a serious bracket racer who has to make round-robin laps during eliminations.

What kind of power can you make with a hydraulic roller cam, you ask? I talked to Scott Walker of ASW Race Engines. When he was
the shop foreman at Oddy/Perfection Race Engines, he built a 460 cubic inch rat motor using a custom Isky hydraulic cam and
lifters, pump gas, 9-1 compression and an 8-71 blower. It made 800+ hp and 700+ lbs of torque at 6,800 rpm. Plenty of poop for a 7.90
class dragster.

As far as small block engines go, Joe Sherman built a small block, pump gas, four-barrel, mouse motor that in a magazine shootout
made an average of 420+ hp and 480+ torque. Not a bad small block.

At Ohio Crankshaft they offer their customers a "street" 550-inch big block engine that develops 600 hp and 675 lbs of torque burning
92 octane gas with a single four-barrel and a hydraulic roller. It could easily be a 10.90 motor and certainly something you could use
in a Super Pro car.

So, the bottom line is that unless you have to have mega horsepower or are trying to set the national record, building your next engine using a hydraulic roller or even replacing what you have now with a hydraulic roller cam might be a good move. I mean power, dependability, and low maintenance -- I can't see the downside.

MAY 05 03

Would like to thank Derek Hart for dropping us a line on the weekends events on the mountain:

Updates on TMR first work party of the 2003 season seen at least a dozen people turn up both Saturday and Sunday, Saturday being
the better of the two days due ole mother nature throwing snow and hail stones. We got the conduits laid and backfilled, ready to
fish the computer cables through. On Sunday we did some major brush clearing at the turn off area to improve the visibility of
the drivers parked off the return road gathering chutes etc. We laid out the guidelines for the new safety barriers required by
the insurance company to protect the starter and crew. Several of us volunteers are going to the track a couple evenings this week
to reinstall the guardrails from the burnout box to the start line. Other good news is that the pile of light poles piled beside the
burnout box guardrail have been moved away to a more suitable spot till we can get them erected. We also moved the washrooms
closer to the spectator area on the hill behind the grandstands, “no more wet shoes when it rains”. They say it was to make
the washrooms more accessible for the fans but I think it was to have a spot to park….”what was that Lucy movie” The Big Trailer?
We still have a ton of work to get finished and only 4 weeks to get there so if anyone can help out please call Laura to set up some
 times etc
                                                                                          best regards , Derek Hart

Just got home from a quick trip to the Lordco B.C. Nationals, NHRA, Lucas Oil divisional race series#1 at Mission Raceway Wow what a show, but it always is in my opinion. The crowd was smaller but the talent was big. I seen at least a dozen TMR past and
present members throughout the day catching the show. The Hemi cars were getting a lot of attention from a few of those members,
me being one of them. Just waiting to get some info from the TMR work party held this weekend and will post asap.
As usual anyone have info or just general chitchat to post send me an email.

Anyone up for a work party on the Mountain this weekend? Laura has just informed me there will be a hand full of people on the hill
this weekend to start the ball rolling for the coming season. The wiring has to be done, but a lot of prep needs to be accomplished
first, moving concrete blocks, digging trenches for more conduit, even 3 or 4 extra hands would help. We will be up there for sure
on Saturday and if we run into problems then Sunday also. hey lets see a good showing for the first work of the season
